Some comments on the "good sound" which I take to be "we could hear the guy and it's not too loud"
I think you do that-you probably please 99% of all concert goers (with the exception of the harder acts).

I'm  going to toss in a no vote.

My position floating between the lower levels of Lab shows and higher levels of Lounge shows means I have had to do the same show on an extremely wide range if equipment. Since I always used my own mic kit, I know that was constant. As long as the equipment was working and I was paying attention to what I was doing, I never heard anything that I would call a major difference.

OR could they raise the price of the tickets if a "big dollar" console was used?

Conversely, would management LOWER the ticket prices if all they were paying for was an LS9 instead of an XL8 or SD7?

And I also am solidly in the 'no one would notice' camp.

So your vote is "no"?

Nothing else matters for the purpose of this thread.

Sure, my vote is a "no," but I'm curious why the question is being asked like this.

This thread comes at a good time. Being in 'NashVegas' I do a lot of live DVD recording type things where the recording split has some crazy set of preamps, and the recording engineers talk gear all day about which preamp has the best warmth while just the right amount of bite, or whatever adjective or pronoun you want to add. Then they see the M7 and ask if we ever use different preamps or EQ's and such.

I respect what they do, but it would nice for them to see how simple my routing is compared to what they have rigged up sometimes.

All that to say no audience member is going notice if its a Midas or Yamaha or whatever.

The audience would only notice a difference in consoles if one of them used "audiophile" Edison plugs on the power cable.

No; the audience wouldn't notice a difference between an XL8 or an M7 or an X32.

No they would not notice.
Why? Because if the soundman is any good then he'll get a fine mix on whatever console he has. And if the soundman is not any good then it'll be a crap mix whether the console cost 100.00, 1000.00, or 100,000.00.

No one would notice; I've never been to a concert where I thought the console sounded bad. I have been to a few where the mix sounded bad for various reasons, but is almost always attributable to human error.

The audience will not notice if the job is done correctly, regardless of board type or manufacturer. The answer is no.
