Can anybody tell me the differences between these two consoles?

Compact has fewer local inputs and outputs (16 XLR in, 8 XLR out vs 32 XLR in, 16 XLR out on the full sized)

Compact also has only 8 input faders as opposed to 16 on the full sized version.

I believe that's the extent of it, someone else can chime in if they have more info.

Thanks Jason!

I have an install to bid and after they reject my recommendation of a Midas Pro1, I may step down to the X32 Compact.

I've seen a few out there already so they're taking hold. Not a bad comment about them yet, nothing but good reviews.

The "compact" version is not that much smaller, not that much lighter, and marginally cheaper than the "full" version. Is size a real constraint ? Then the X32 "producer" (not yet available) might be a better choice.

Good call Nicolas!

As I researched this further I found exactly what you say to be true. The compact is really no less money than the full X32.

Just to clarify, it's the full X32 that I've seen in use, not the compact.

Note that the Producer DOES differ from the X32 full (and compact) in several meaningful ways.

  • No LCD Scribble strips
  • 5" vs 7" LCD display
  • dedicated Mute group and assign buttons and encoders are removed
  • No AES digital port

Now granted, you have to take into account how much smaller the Producer is than the compact (seems like a naming issue to me).  It is also $500.00 less expensive.

The missing LCD Scribble strips are the big ommission for me.  If you are only using 16 inputs, then it may not be too big a deal, and you may be able to find a way to use old fassioned label tape to do the job for 2 layers.

IMHO if you ever intend on using a digital snake to a S16 stage box (thus raising your input count to 32), the lack of scribble strips would simply be impossible to work with (ie, 4 groups of 8 faders to attempt to remember what input is on what position on what layer  :P ).

Sorry but XLR ins don't mean anything at all, XLR is just a connector

X32 has 32 Microphone Preamps
X32 Compact has only 16 Microphone Preamps

X32 has 16 Balanced Line Outputs + 6 unbalanced Line Outputs
X32 Compact has 8 Balanced Line Outputs + 6 unbalanced Line Outputs

X32 has 4 Assinable encoders and 8 assinable buttons
X32 Compact doesn't have any assinable encoders, but has the 8 assinable buttons

X32 has 16 channel faders per bank
X32 Compact has 8 channel faders per bank

On the X32 compact you can extend the channel faders to the DCA/BUS right fader section, on the X32 you can't do this

X32 has 40 channels
X32 Compact has 32 Channels

Since the previous post was from August 2013, I'm guessing he probably has everything figured out by now..

But since you brought it up, one thing on the Sweetwater article is wrong. Both the full size and compact are 40 channels, although 2 of them are always USB playback, so they're really only 38 channels. Same brains, same capabilities, just fewer on-board inputs and outputs on the compact.

Also, I'd prefer an M32R over an X32 compact, but those weren't available in 2013.

Full sized X32 cannot go in checked baggage
X32 Compact can.

With the recent price drop I would give serious look at the Midas branded M32R, it runs the same software, higher build quality, better preamps, no Behringer badge.

The Full sized X32 can go as checked bag.
The weight with case must not exceed 32kg (you need the SKB molded plastic case for that as it weights less than 10kg)
You show it at the check-in counter, it gets weighted and after you have to deliver it into the Out-size baggage. It counts as a checked bag anyway, like a Surfboard or a musical instrument, actually you have to say it's a music instrument.

Saying this, of course the process is easier with an X32 compatc
