John,
Where did you read about the requirement for shielded cable?

John,
Where did you read about the requirement for shielded cable?
The cable that Soundcraft recommends for the Vi series is shielded to comply with EMC regulations. Page 1-6 in the Vi6 user manual.
Probably not an absolute requirement, but we have always used shielded cable with our Vi6. We went through a few different brands of cable when we first had the console at FOH to find one that worked out to 300ft reliably. Seemed to be an issue with the cable capacitance. Tactical cat5 from Digiflex (we are in Canada) worked out great.
Now that surface is at monitors with short cat5 to connect the stage rack. FOH uses the optional optical madi snake cards.
The shielded cable may make things a bit more rf friendly at monitors.
I am far from an expert on catX cabling, but these have been my experiences.
Thanks for all the info you have posted on network cabling Bob.

Thanks for the update and great info on cable type John. I couldn't find anything specific and was beginning to think the manuals had been written by another company. I would imagine you like the Vi6. Quite a nice looking board to say the least. How is the sound?

The manuals can be a little vague on some things.
The sound is awesome! I am a big fan of this console and find it hard to switch to a non touch screen console for one offs.
The preamp cards and the i/o cards in the local rack are made by Studer, Soundcraft makes the surface and the effects card in partnership with lexicon.
Happy gigging and safe travels!

I am also using TecNec cable from Markertek.  I have a 20', a 100', and a 200', and a coupler.  The cables have a Neutrik end which looks a bit like an XLR connector.  It is working great, though it has only been out to a few shows so far.
Has anyone ordered a "dual" cable like this to make use of the redundant connection on their stagebox?  I am thinking it would be nice to have this, tied to a 12/3 SO cable for one run to FOH.  I have seen several pre-made Quad Cat5e cables, but no Duals...
