Here's a topic I haven't seen on here yet...
« on: March 27, 2013, 08:47:22 PM »

As most of you, I'm a touring audio professional. If I was to visit you on your tour, what tools would you not be caught dead without? For me it changes if I'm mixing or if I'm tech'ing.

Mixing:
Smart,
Q Box,
Musician ear plugs,
SPL Meter,
Sennheiser Headphones,
iPod cable,
Tascam DR-40

Tech'ing:
Q Box,
Digital QBox,
Multi-Meter,
basic tools,
Musician ear plugs,
Flashlights.

What about you?

I'm usually doing both...my short list:

Westone IEMs (when also mixing IEMs, which is usually)
iPod cable
iPhone charger
Multimeter

I'm not in the band mixing business, so my needs will be a little different than most here.

Mixing:
Instant Replay with all my stings and sound effects on it
Laptop with Smaart and iTunes and a USB audio interface
My Sony headphones
My Comm headset
Various colors of 1" and .5" gaffer tape for labeling
USB and Ethernet cables to hook up console and other gear to computer
TRS jack to FXLR adapter for sniffing lines.
Laser digital inclinometer if using line arrays
iPad for reading books when I'm bored
Set of small screwdrivers
Small LED flashlight

Teching RF:
TTi RF spectrum analyzer
Laptop with IAS software
Sony headphones
Comm headset
Label tape
Rat Pack Belts
small screwdrivers
LED Flashlight
iPad

Teching Comm:
Laptop with Riedel Artist Software'
Sony headset

My pencil case!
I have a personal flight case with all sorts of stuff in, but the pencil case is always the most used. I own just about every colour of highlighter pen they make, and lots of felt tips. I mark my consoles in artist tape rather than white LX, so normal highlighters and felt tips can be used. A colourful console might look awful, but it helps break it up and especially in theatre where you're looking for mics quickly, it doesn't half help.

Multi-tool
Flashlight
Pocket Knife
Phone

I don't even leave the house without those items.  Everything else is gig dependant.

If I'm mixing, then I'll bring my gig bag with
head phones
DI
a variety of adapters and connectors
board tape
sharpie
Cable tester
Laptop (with Smaart)
Interface
Measurement mic
Notepad
pens
SM58
mic sanitizer
a couple of mic cables
9v and AA batteries
a couple of mic clips in various sizes

I'm a 'house guy' now, but when i was still in the biz i did mostly corporate stuff.  i packed very light....

1.  Sharpie(s)
2.  Leatherman
3.  Comm headset
4.  2 channel Com Beltpack with separate line-level input
5.  Internet accessing device [laptop, iPhone, iPad]

That's it.  I found that the longer i was in the freelance biz, the more i worked for top flight companies that brought everything else you could possibly need in their Giant Diesel WorkBox on Wheels so i didn't have to carry my huge briefcase of death anymore.

My Comm headset

Not to derail but, do you have a favorite comm headset? I'm fed up with using standard CC sets over several days as they start to hurt like crazy so I was thinking of buying a nice set, ideally still with some isolation and a flip up to mute mic would be good.

Thanks

I do, but unfortunately it's not made anymore. I just got my 3rd one in 25 years from a friend. I hope this one lasts as long as the last 2. If you can find one, it's a Shure SM12. It is a great headset for a soundman because it lets you position the earpiece away from your ear so you still hear the room with both ears.

Even if I couldn't have an SM12, I would own my own headset. Who wants to wear a comm headset that countless strangers have sweated into and coughed into? Blecch.
