I kinda always thought that when using itunes for reference music that the signal could be routed into Smaart without having to run an output cable into an input on your i/o.  Is this correct?  I've been messing with my system for a learning experience and if I assign my reference signal from my core-audio input, it just makes my computer's onboard mic the reference.

I'm on Smaart 7.4, macbook pro, motu ultralite i/o....

Outputs 1-2 are going to my home stereo inputs

Motu input 1-2 are my measurement mics

I know I must be missing something obvious, please help

edit: I can use it coming out of my motu and then going to one of the motu's inputs.  There has to be an easier way

Nope, you will need to use an external loopback cable taking the output of your device, and feeding it back into one of the inputs.

Nope, only Smaart's signal generator can loop back internally if you are using an appropriate interface in which the inputs and outputs are synchronized.  But even then, iTunes will not be able to be internally looped back into Smaart.

I've never used SMAART but if you're on a Mac you can download a small application called Soundflower which allows you to route audio from one application to any other. Not sure if this would work for you but it's worth a look.

Putting it to an output and then back to an input solves timing (and perhaps conversion) issues so it's actually the best solution unless you really need the extra input.

It lets you route audio from any program to any program on your Mac.

Again, the issue is more to do with timing that just routing outputs to inputs.  Software solutions like jack osx or soundflower work ok for simple recording work, however fall apart for dual channel FFT work where synchronization of signals are critical.
