...The only really difficult part is gripping the mic stand tightly enough without deforming the tube or scratching the chrome, but still keeping it from turning while cutting the threads. We ended up wrapping it with gaff tape and then a cloth and gripping it with vise-grips, which worked, but I'm wondering if there's a better way in case we have to do it again.

Golf club re-grippers use a split rectangle of rubber with a hole down the center. Slap the club in the block if rubber, place the rubber in a vice.  The diameter of a club holder would be too small, but the concept applies.
