I've been 65' from the PA, and I've been 300 feet from the PA at festivals. All depends on the capacities. As long as I'm in front of the delay lines and where the majority of the crowd is, I'm happy.

I'll have to agree with this. We just set up at a festival for the weekend and FOH got moved to THIRTY (30) feet from the stage. I'm hearing mostly stage with some monitors and maybe just a tad of the front fills. It sucks.

I'd much rather be too far from the stage and have to mix a bit lower than to be hearing more stage than main PA.

I am in the fortunate position to have a permanent festival stage built on site. We want to also build a permanent FOH mixing/lighting position. QUESTION: What distance is recommended from the front of stage to the mixing desk? We won't have permanent audio installed, so acts/production co's. will run a snake.

Is 50 feet too close?

If I recall correctly from the Yamaha book...

*minimum* distance from stage to FOH equates to the distance between the L/R speakers.
*maximum* distance from stage to FOH equates to the distance between the L/R speakers * 2

...you could setup anywhere between min. and max. distance.

Of course, there's other variables/issues that may restrict where FOH can be.  I did a show where the stage speakers were ~30 ft. apart, but we had to setup FOH 100 ft. back.  It worked.

Those figures might be a bit too arbitrary. For example, I'm FOH this weekend at a festival in a 350' deep tent, but the stage is only 24' wide, PA stacks are less than 30' apart. FOH is about 30' from the stage and it's awful. Even 60' might be too close as you'd just be getting out of downfills and barely into the main array. I'd say 2/3 of the way back from the stage to end of venue, and/or before the first delay zone is a good starting point. As stated already in this thread, 75' for large shows is usually acceptable.

Isn't it just a little sad that production levels have gotten to the point that this is what the front 500 ticketpayers are listening to?

Whatever works.  Just add 50 feet if it's Gallagher.

That's not just an issue with reinforced sound, though... the front few rows at my local symphony are two price categories below the seats directly behind them.
