Simple line mixer
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:10:17 PM »

What is your favorite simple line mixer?

1. Would like balanced inputs and outputs
2. Line level input switch is a big + (XLR input)
3. Minimal amount of inputs.. say 2 xlr 2 rca (think dj mixer and an ipod)
4. Preferably no EQ or other knobs that may confuse operator
5. Cost less than $500 retail
6. mountable (rack or wall w/ bracket)

In a perfect world I have 4 knobs. Input A,B,C,D (or 1,2,3,4) volume and thats it. Maybee a clip light. 2 XLR/line balanced inputs and 2 rca inputs with simple XLR output. Mono is fine.

rolls RM82 is my top contender
Rane MLM82 looks good
RDL RU-MX4L looks awesome but not really mountable
crown audio 14M looks good but barrier strip may be a deal breaker
Nady RMX 6 looks promising
ART MX622 maybee - but approaching too many knobs to 'mess it up'
shure scm268 would be good if it had pads/line input (perhaps in line pads would work?)

any other suggestions?

rolls RM82 - looks like a good solution

Rane MLM82 looks good - this would be my top choice

crown audio 14M looks good but barrier strip may be a deal breaker - maybe you can make a front-mounted patch panel?

Nady RMX 6 looks promising - Never been a fan of Nady or similar cheap gear, even for throw-away gigs…there's still not enough reliability for me.

ART MX622 maybee - there are other, similar ART mixers that could work.

shure scm268 - Unless you defeat them internally, each XLR input has a 100Hz HPF (there might be one on the output, too…I forget).  You can also do some circuit work that adds a 50dB pad to the XLR inputs.  Directions are in the back of the manual.

I like the Ashly MX-206 - may be a bit above budget. My second choice would be the Rane.

IMO, Ashley "owns" this market niche.

A couple more options might be the Whirlwind/USAudio MIX series, either MIX-5, MIX-5S, or MIX-6. I don't have personal experience so I have no commentary on quality/usage/reliability, just giving more options.
