Digital Console's Kick and Bass via Sidechain Compression.
« on: November 24, 2012, 09:51:53 PM »

Sadly, conversation over some Turkey Day leftovers... We were wondering what digital console's channel compressor will allow you to side chain kick or bass?

It's been a long while since I've been on a Digico, but the onboard channel comps on the Avid products I've found won't do it..

So is there any out there that will do it?

It may not be a Digico or an Avid, but the X32 does allow side chain access of all channels.  The 01V96 does but in groups within 8 channels.

IIRC, Soundcraft Vi allows gates to be side chained, but not comps.

Yet, Avid is quite popular, and doesn't do it.. Sometimes I use this as a last ditch resort to clean up my low end. One would think we'd have better things to speak of at the dinner table at Thanksgiving, but my family is a bunch of tech heads like me...

Although a venue's channel comp wont do it, whats stopping you using a Dyn3 plugin (very similar to channel comp) and doing it there?

As I believe others have said, all the Yamaha products will allow this kind of processing!

I think you'll find that pretty much every single digital console on the market will allow you to do this, although their methods vary:

Yamaha: Check! (But channel must be in same group of 8 on M7)
Avid: Check! (But you may or may not need to use a plugin, depending on whether you need sidechain filtering only, or dedicated sidechain input)
Digico: Check! (Most flexible routing/processing of anything on the market)
Midas [powered by Behringer]: Check!
Behringer [powered by Midas]: Check!
Allen & Heath: Check!
Soundcraft: Check!

Thats pretty much everything right?
