Crown itech 8000 vs. Macrotech 12000i for powering JBL SRX 728's
« on: November 16, 2012, 09:47:17 PM »

I am getting some JBL SRX 728 subs.  I have run systems using the itech 8000 with the 728's and love the sound.  I don't need the processing in the itech 8000 since I have XTA 226 processors.  I am wondering how the 728's would sound with the Macrotech 12000i.  What is your experience with the Macrotech 12000i  vs the itech 8000?  The itech is 4000 watts per channel while the Macrotech is 3750 watts per channel.  What is the sound difference between the two and which would be more reliable?  The itechs would be factory refurbs.  The Macros would be new with more warranty.  Thanks.

Despite what crown says, the two amps are actually the same amp. Itech has processing and Mai doesn't (Although it has some nice built in limiters). There was plenty of failures with the early itech line but these may have been sorted.
I had a bad experience with a B-stock ma9000i and had to use my warranty twice for major repairs.
Bottom line, i wouldn't buy any of the itech, mai, HD amps without good warranty, they are too expensive to fix in case they do break down. Sound wise they are great amps and will all do the job fine. The ma12000i is rated at 4500wpc at 4r and will be more than plenty for the srx 728 boxes one per side.

Ooops! Didn't notice that crown had changed the specs since i last checked. About a year ago, the ma12000i was rated at 4500wpc 4r and ma9000i was rated at 3500wpc 4r, now i notice that they have down rated them to 3750 and 2800 respectively. They sure like to play with the numbers, don't they!

I own the MA12000i.  It's been a very solid amp with no issues for me.

The current power ratings on the MAi page of the Crown site are wrong.  Looks like somebody made some copy and paste mistakes when doing maintenance to the page.  I have a call into Crown to let them know about it.
The MAi amps and the I-Tech HD amps are the same as far as output stage stuff and have the same power ratings.
