HDMI to flat screen 100' away.
« on: August 16, 2012, 04:03:23 PM »

Greetings: We are in the process of installing a flat screen to replace our projector that burned up. We will be using Cat6, & Cat5e between the computer and flat screen, using a J-Tech Digital HDMI extender. We haven't installed it yet so really don't know if it will work. We have a 100VGA cable for backup if this doesn't work. BTW does someone have a source for all the new connections, such as HDCP, HDSI, RGBHV, also HDMI. What we would like is the pinouts and specs so we can learn how to better implement use of all this
technology. Thanks for any input. We are in a small church, about 30 to 35 in attendance.
16channel Yamaha mixer. We are buying all the new equipment so the church is in no obligation to purchase.

It should work, but check with the extender, what resolution is supported up to 100ft. Some support 1080 only up to 50ft, some longer. Do try various resolutions, when you get the chance.

The 1080 resolution is not a standard VGA resolution, so there also might be some scaling and testing to be done to get the best possible picture.

HDCP is not a connector.
HDSDI is a professional grade signal on coax cables with RG59 connectors. Used on most professional gear, can handle 1080p up to 300ft without much worry. You will be hard pressed to find a screen with and HDSDI input, most probably will have to get a scaler inbetween.
RGBHV is 5wire 'VGA' connection. Pretty standard stuff in installation, compatible with most computers, almost all screens, projectors and scalers. Can also give good results on longer runs (100 ft with no extender @ 1200p).
HDMI is consumer grade digital audio video with a shabby connector. Good for connecting consumer gear, most pro gear has DVI connectors which deliver the same signal without transformation, but will not transmit audio. The signal is limited to about 30 - maximum 50ft.

Unless you plan on manufacturing related equipment there would usually be little reason to worry about such technical details.  There are some good online resources to learn about new digital media technologies in general such as http://www.extron.com/training/index.aspxhttp://www.kramerelectronics.com/academy/training.asp and http://www.hdmi.org/learningcenter/faq.aspx.

For 100ft over CAT 5/6 for a house of worship application , you can use a HDMI extender that runs over Ethernet Cat 5e/6 cable.

As far as a general pinout and wiring resource, my go to site is http://www.pinouts.ru.

And before you pull cable for the install? Wire it up and test, easier to troubleshoot before it's installed.

You can buy 100ft HDMI cables at monoprice.com they work just fine. It has a very thick jacket that is quite stiff.

The unfortunate issues with HDMI but work fine for what (do they support 1080p, deep color, Ethernet, etc. if those are applicable), with what devices  (not every HDMI input and/or output are identical) and under what conditions?  And do they have the appropriate ratings for concealed installation or installation in plenum spaces if that is applicable?

My understanding is that a HDMI cable being 'certified' may also mean little as apparently a manufacturer can build and test a version of one length, get it certified and then manufacture much longer versions of the same cable under that original certification.

So maybe a 100' HDMI cable would work but I'd make sure you could return it if not and test it in the application before installing it.
