Has anyone used the Denon RC-F400S remote with either the DN-F400 or DN-F650R SC card players?

I was looking into buying a used Instant Replay, but have always been bothered by the fact that you can not play MP3's, and there is not SD slot or USB connection on even the newest Instant Replay. 

The Denon RC-F400S with the DN-F400 player uses SD cards and plays MP3's, making it a rather attractive option, however I have one concern.  20 hot buttons will probably not enough UNLESS I can set up "hot start button lists" and can quickly, all at once, pull up another list of 20 hot start assignments.  Is this possible, or must I always assign the buttons one at a time to a specific sound effect or track?

Maybe time for a computer based solution.  The speed of loading and sorting cues from clients that hand you a USB stick and expect instant gratification can't be beat.

If I was to go with a "computer based solution", I'd probably go with Sports Sounds Pro.  Frankly, however, I think I'd perfer a "hardware solution" if it has the necessary features.

I have had very good results with Sports Sounds Pro.
Thousands of cues played and never a crash or glitch. Runs on the most basic of laptops.
I usually mouse it or use the space bar but the touch screen sounds like a nice idea.
It's a very cost effective and reliable solution.
I know this doesn't answer the OP but if you are considering a purchase, SSP would be worth a look see.

If the desire for a hardware solution is to achieve a dedicated solution that can be turned over to an unskilled operator then there is no comparison. You sure can't surf the net for porn on a Denon card player. If the goal is to have that tactile and visual button surface that an IR machine presents there are a number of USB trigger pads on the market that achieve a similar interface for something like sports sounds.

my experience has been that most, if not all, of the surfaces that would mimic an Instant Replay generate Midi commands.  Unfortunately, SSP does not respond to Midi commands.  It works from Mouse input, or Keyboard input.  Which is a bummer, cause i really like SSP, and have used it a lot in the past.

i've been using another App lately that has worked very well for me.  it is a Mac OS or iOS product, so if you're a Windows only user you can stop reading now.  it's called Soundboard and it's sold by Ambrosia Software  ( http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/soundboard-mac/ ).  it's very similar in concept to SSP, but each key can also be triggered with a Midi signal, which opens it up to the many hardware surfaces available for such things.  They make one app for the Mac, one app for the iPad, and one app that turns the iPad into a remote for the Mac version.  the iPad versions are pretty much a 'poke the button and it plays'  kind of thing.  simple to use.  works great.  i've used it on stage and triggered it with a Midi foot controller and it's been rock solid.

I know that these are used with Qcart and Qlab.  Can't say for certain about Sports Sounds but my surmise is that all either program cares about is mapping to the hot key character and thus simply want's to roll that thunder cue when the 'T' key is pressed.

Here is my 2 cents.  I have been using an X-keys XK-24 http://xkeys.com/xkeys.php for running shows and x-keys Professional for programing.  They have versions with jog wheels.  I run ControllerMate to map the keys.  Applescripts can be run from ControllerMate so when I create a new qlab file all my scripts can be used immediately, without having to copy and paste them into a cue list and eating up triggers. You can also build logic into the keys, I have keys that toggle stage so one key opened all groups push the same button again and it closes all groups.  One key increases the cues master fader 2.5 db, and hold the mod and the same vol key and get a 5 db increase.  They have 1x1 (normal size) keys, 1X2 (i.e. the enter key), 2x2 keys, and spacers. The 2x2 key is great for a big "Go" button it sits on 4 button stems, so less its likely to accidentally trigger the button and redundancy if one contact ever failed.  The XK-24 fits nicely in landscape under the EQ knob on a M7CL.

I have the x-key go button firing a MSC Go over ipMIDI to trigger my back-up, so if we ever need to switch to the backup: the board -op hits a user button on the mixer to advance snapshots which switches the cascade inputs (big tip here use cascade inputs if your mixer has them to keep channels free) to the backup, and then toggle the kvm switch to the back up.  At this point they have to trigger using the space bar (assuming qlab crashed on the main machine), I have a usb switcher but I haven't had time to install and test yet.  ControllerMate can be flaky mapping keys if a keyboard is hot plugged with a program it maps to is running, this is were using MIDI triggers out shines my setup.  Other than that I have been using this set up for 2 year without issue.
