What to buy?
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:27:49 pm »

hello,

All of my experience has been in the Audio world, mostly for live music. I've done some AV work in the past but nothing big.

So, I'm back into the AV world and I need a new small mp3/wav player. But I also need something with a VGA output just to set up the video projection in breakout rooms where I don't have a presentationpro or the client's laptop.

I would like to buy an ipod. But I don't know which one supports VGA output, any advice?

I need to be able to send a few video test patterns for the projector with 1024 x 768 resolution.

I don't want to spend too much money in this. This is just to set up the video screen and make my speakers rattle in small budget events. Nothing fancy.

Is there any other small media player that supports VGA output besides the ipod?

Also, I know some of you may say that the Ipad is good for all the digital consoles and video stuff... But our main Audio and Video engineer takes care of all that, so I don't see the point in buying one at this time since the company won't let me use the m7  :P
thanks

Miguel,

I don't know that iPods have an adapter that breaks out to VGA.  There are ones with composite (works on the "green" channel for RGBHV connections) and component, and even some HDMI for the iPad (don't know about the iPods).

The iPod Touch 4G can use the same VGA adapter as the iPad.

That's good to know!  Add another tip/trick to the book...

I believe the iPod Touch will output whatever resolution and scan rate is used when creating the video file and will support 1024x768 resolution with the optional VGA adapter (576p/480p with the component adapter and 576i/480i with the composite video adapter) but is limited to 640x480 resolution at 30 frames per second for MPEG-4 video files, 720p at 30fps for H.264 video and 1280x720 at 30fps for M-JPEG files.  With the 30fps limit then that may not be the best option to emulate a typical 1024x768, 60Hz computer VGA signal.
