100v line from Zeck PT7 amp
« on: July 26, 2012, 07:58:03 AM »

I provide temporary announcement systems for football matches and the like using horn speakers. Now, up until this i have been using TOA mixer amps specifically designed for 100v line operation. However, they are only 180w models. On some occasions I have had a large system up, and have split the system into two segments, using a seperate amp for each one. However, I notice that on the spec sheet for the Zeck PT7 amp it says that the amp can be used for 70v or 100v line operation in the bridge mode.

In addition to that, any PT amplifier working in BRIDGE mode can
be directly connected to a 100V-line (70V-line) constant
voltage sound system.

Would this work okay for 100v line operation? And what sort of wattage should I expect from the amp?

The manual can be viewed here..the quote in question is on page 12

Power = (Voltage**2)/Impedance, so (70.7V**2)/8 Ohms equals 625W.  Thus any amp rated 625W or greater into 8 Ohms should be able to direct drive a system that uses 8 Ohm speakers with 70V transformers.
Doing the same for 100V gives (100V**2)/8 Ohms, which is 10,000/8 or 1,250W.  So the amp would need to be rated 1,250W or greater into 8 Ohms.  The PT7 is rated at 1,400W into 8 Ohms in bridge mode so that should work, provided the speaker transformer secondaries are 8 Ohm.  The amp would be 1,250W at 70V but your output is going to be determined by the taps at the speaker transformers.
