Those 2 popular instrument mics have presence peak that do not bode well for "modern" guitar sounds, unless you have a old jazz style flat-wound guitar player.

Ive found the Heil Pr-30 a very good natural sounding instrument mic, especially for micing guitars, I use mine on Z-bars for fast/easy placement.

+1 I also like the PR35 which has great rejection of the stage.
I used one last night on a guitar amp.

Being given a budget could be very helpful.

+2. Nothing can touch a PR-35, 30 or especially a PR-40 for micing guitar cabinets IMO. All the upper end chime, mid range and great bottom end.

While I'm extremely fond of the Heil mics, I think a Royer 121/122 might actually touch them.  Now, add "for the money" and I'll agree.

The 906 for me really outshines the 609. I like the fact that it sounds great and is one less mic stand. I have a Z Bar, but with tilt back amps, they don't work that well through the handle strap. The 906 just lays on the grill and sounds good.

I haven't tried the Heil mics, but if they're good enough for Bob... well that's all the endorsement I need.

"for the money"

Thanks Ned.

I prefer my mic to be as flat as possible so I can decide how much instrument specific hype I want and where I want to put it.

Right now, I am thinking that a bag full of Heil PR31's would match my style beautifully.

No microphone will make a bad player sound good.

Any microphone that can handle the SPL will do for a good player.

I agree.  Amost any mic works for guitar and I would challenge anybody to tell what mic is being used by listening in a live situation.
