I run an outdoor summer concert series. Looking for ways to improve the light show. I'd like to add a hazer, but I'm wondering how effective this would be outdoors with a light breeze blowing most of the time. Anybody have experience with this? Show duration is typically three hours. I don't want fog, just a light consistent haze. Lighting fixtures are about twelve feet up in the air. Stage area is about 20 square feet. Not looking to spend more than $1000. Any suggestions? Would two units be better than one? Is this a waste of time in an outdoor environment?

Oops, that should have said 20 feet by 20 feet, or 400 square feet.

if you have a way to contain/distribute the haze evenly across the stage it's not a waste outdoors...there's several tricks to getting indoor quality haze outside, but they're industry secrets

James, care to divulge any of those secrets? The stage does have a backdrop, but nothing on the sides for containment. Not looking to get indoor quality effects, just a little more presence of the light beams. My initial thoughts were to install two hazers up at light level. Would they work better on the ground? Any specific models you would recommend?

without wind walls there's little point unless it's a very calm day

as for haze distribution secrets, think HVAC

cheap and if they break it's not a huge deal cause they're like $20.

Realistically any fan you stick in front of a hazer for an extended period of time will get gunked up with oil/residue/dirt and will need to be replaced regularly

Get a decent hazer, run it at full tilt, and enjoy the beamage!  Play around with the placement of the hazer and fan(s) positions.  It will be a lot easier if it's not a completely wide open area, but you can definitely make it work.

This is an Ultratec Radiance Hazer at full output on a roughly 20' by 20' stage with 5-10mph breeze and no wind walls. Placement of the hazer could have been better but it has more than enough output. Get the Froggy's Neutronic fluid.  And yes, I know that DJ's are the scum of the earth.

You could also see about borrowing from a local nursery some potted tall shrubs to help create a wall along the sides of the front stage to reduce the wind blowning around. 

Also provides some small amount of crowd control.
