Opinions on EV Blue Raven mic

I have used it on horns for a big band and it sounded as cool as it looked for the application. Trombone mic IIRC. Better than the 58's we usually end up using.
They make a red one that is similar in specs I believe. Also a great sounding mic for those mid-rangy instruments.

The red one is a condenser. The black one is a dynamic.

They are now calling them the Blue Raven and the Blue Cardinal. I guess someone decided advertising that the products are a collaboration  with Blue Microphones (or is it BLUE? B.L.U.E. maybe?) would be a good idea.

I have been interested in them since they came out, having been a fan of a lot of EV mics.

The way I see it, if it's priced like an SM57 and is at least as good, they'd be an inexpensive way to expand mic selection and add some stage dress too.

Everyone (all three) I have talked to that's used it liked it. Guitar cabinets and horns have been the applications.

You know, stuff you stick a 57 in front of.

I haven't heard the Raven but I have two of the "Red" Cardinals and they sound awesome on guitar cabinets!  It's now my go to mic for almost all electric guitars.

I have the Cardinal as well, and it sounds great on guitar. I have also had really good luck on male vocals (though only with a very excellent singer who has a strong voice) and on hi hat, though it looks pretty weird on a hi hat.

I own a pair, I have used them on horns with good results, and floor toms.  I did not like them on guitar, sax, or vocal.

I don't find them as neutral as some mics that I prefer.

The yoke can be a problematic, it requires an included hex wrench to keep tweeked, so don't loose it.

All in all, I don't regret the purchase due to the deal I got, but if paying full price I would probably buy something else.

They sound great on horns, and excellent on guitars. I wish I never sold mine.

weaknesses are they are big and bulky for traveling and the built in mount can break or strip and be a hassle unless you have quick release on them.
