dbx Project 1 266?
« on: June 14, 2012, 10:09:44 AM »

I found a dbx Project 1 266 compressor (minus the 18vdc power supply) in my jam room last night. Was/is this a decent compressor? I need to buy a new compressor anyway. Did this just save me some money?

What are you planning to use it for? The 266 is not my favorite DBX comp, actually it's one of my least favorite but that does NOT mean it won't work for your situation.

The I would say since you have the unit already it might make sense to give the thing a shot before you spend any money on a comp.
The PSU should be easy and cheep to buy if you cant dig one up, plus even if you don't end up liking it you can resell it easier with a PSU,
I think from the cheaper dbx comps, the 166 is a much better unit then 266 but the thing with a comp is that same exact unit will sound different even with same signal with a different operator so if you are not all that experienced setting up a comp  sometimes you will get better results with something with less user controls and a simpler interface.
The comps I like usually have more controls for me to get my desired effect but if you don't know how to use all the extras then you likely won't have them set optimally and reading the manuals isn't always all that easy because they can be very confusing, even if you do understand this stuff they tend to sound like a riddle.

I was planning on inserting it into the lead vocal channel.

When I went to powered mains, subs, and monitors I stopped using my DR260. Should I use the 266, the DR260, or buy something else?

For vocal comp, use the 266.  the driverack is not for inserting on a channel.

Thanks, dick. I bought that one.

Now when you find the original you can sell it on EBay for $15.  Send me some......

Well to be fair its pretty much the cheapest compressor on the market once you get past real low end brands like Behringer, Samson etc...I don't mind it myself. Its not fantastic but certainly usable. I like them a helluva lot better than the TC C300's that were all the rage a few years back.

I think from the cheaper dbx comps, the 166 is a much better unit then 266

The 1066 is the first noticeable jump in quality from the 266 IMO (besides the proper limiter in the 166), much better and worth the extra money.

Joey this comp should treat you just fine for what you want to do.
