BSS Soundweb 9088ii's won't connect. Can you help?
« on: March 16, 2012, 02:22:12 AM »

I scored a couple of the older green BSS Soundwebs and am trying to program them but the Sound Designer software keeps saying "preparing to go online" and then "Soundweb could not find a device on the network"

I'm using a gigabyte RS282 to USB converter w/ a gender bender and have tried several different versions of soundweb software and tried all kinds of different ports and baud rate settings. I'm connected to the rear port. I could try to connect to the front port by hacking up a s-video cable but that's about all I have left to try.

Somebody help a brother out or Im gonna have to sell these off and I don't wanna. They where pulled from a working system.

Probly program locked in to that system they came out of. Have you tried reset to factory default?

Here's what I've tried so far...

Two different RS232/RS485 adapters.
Two different 9088ii's
Three different PC's with two different OS's
Multiple baud rates, com ports and addresses.

The only thing left to try is to build a cable and try the front 232 port. I read in my travels that perhaps if the units where in a system being controlled by one of the aftermarket controllers that they wold be programmed to answer only the front port.

Today I took the units to work where we use a rs232 adapter to talk down the snake system to our XTA DSP's. This was to eliminate any potential problems concerning the adapter, OS, or PC. Everything worked like clockwork when talking to the XTA's. I fire up and connect the 9088's and Sound Designer can't find any units on the network. I went directly from the USB port through the adapter to the 9088ii's rear port.

So I guess I'll try hacking up an S-video cable and building a front port dongle.

Could it be that someone set the serial line to some odd configuration?
Ya know, 4800 7 bit no parity or some such?
I apologize if it was stated but I didnt read the whole thread. Did you reset to factory settings?

Have you tried calling (not e-mailing) BSS about it?

I'm going to contact them Monday about it though I don't expect much in the way of free help since this line was discontinued years ago and they are now a Harmen company.

My experiences with BSS service was mostly positive, although I haven't used a BSS product in a couple of years. I strongly suggest you have everything set up and ready to go before you call them.
I do remember that the earlier units had issues with some USB adaptors. You might need a PC with a real com port.

Found the solution via another forum. Gonna copy here for future viewers:

"The issue was not having a null modem adapter. Thanks for the help guys!

Both units are doing fine now.

Once I got up and running with one I wasn't able to connect to the second unit. Either on the network vie Ethernet between the two or by using it's rear com port. Turned out both units where named the same name although they came from the same install previously. After renaming the problem unit I was able to flash the firmware and now both are talking just fine and I can use both units rear com ports. "
