Between two similar subwoofers
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:44:18 PM »

Why the same power or a quite similar specs between two or more sub woofers can sound very difference?
what are the other aspect that make subwoofer's sound deep, high impact?

how do i know which subwoofer can produces high impact bass ( as specially for kick drum) by looking at technical specs?

The same or similar SPL, freq response, design and power rating between two difference subwoofer will not give the same impact and sound...

help me please  :'(

thank's in advanced!

different things such as magnet power, voice coil gap, vc former material, vc wire type, cone weight, cone material, cone surrond design and material, etc. to name a few. yep virtually identical specs and different manufacturers but they sound different. cabnet size , the port tuning , added passive tweeking stuff(coils , caps, resistors) affect the sound. cabnet stiffnes and material. and of course this is if you inplug one woofer and plug another in the same electronics in front of it. i use to talk to a guy named Marc at dynaudo in Skanderborg Denmark back in the late 1980's about this stuff when dynaudio sold raw drivers to the public. i had an mci long distance card ! i dont remeber how much money i spent on the calls. i had dynaudios number memorized for a while !

It would really help if you would provide the model numbers of 2 subs that you are talking about.  That way we could possibly point you in a direction on the difference-usually caused by specs that are "not quite right" or don't exactly mean what they say.

Without that information-we have no idea if your statement is "correct" or not.

It also doesnt help that one mfr will fudge the figures, and the other doesnt..... making the 'fudged' one sound much worse than its 'similar' counterpart. One thing to look for is actual measurement data, and not just a frequency response chart. You'll very quickly discover that there are very few that will publish true measurement specs.

I know 2 girls who are both 5ft. 6in. tall have blonde hair and weigh 124 lbs. and wear size 8 dresses. Which one would you like to date?  Ahh, now you see the problem with spec. sheets.

Hilarious, and absolutely true in relation to speakers. As posted already, there are many, many, variables in the engineering and construction of every driver; not to mention the cabinet that it is loaded into.
Science and Art.
There's a reason it's always a good idea, to arrange a listen, before buying any cabinet that you haven't heard.
Are you asking about raw drivers, or complete loaded cabinets?
As posted above, more info will help,

And how would you know without measuring/weighing them for yourself?  Hence the whole thing about trusting spec sheets and checking for yourself.  How did they come up with the numbers?  Under what circumstances?

First date with Ivan:

He rolls up in a 14 foot truck containing 4 types of scales, a water tank for body fat measurement and a mass spectrometer to determine true hair color.

He pulls out a Pelican case with calipers, various rulers and tape measures.

If she meets spec, roll out the medieval rack for "pull testing".   Then tell her it's a Dutch treat date.
