Sub purchasing pondering: sb250 vs. Fulcrum 2X21" vs. some 2X18"
« on: February 23, 2012, 01:51:35 PM »

I've been pondering increasing my sub inventory and am thinking of a few angles. Primarily, I've been bringing sound for both high end wedding work, as well as some rock bands. I have been seeing a small rise in EDM gigs as well.

EAW SB250
Pros: I already have four of these and have done auditoriums with them.
Used ones tend to be easy to come by.
Relatively light.
Small footprint.
Pretty tight sound.
Cons: Less low-end extension.
Consumers who only know a little might dismiss because they are not 2X18"

Fulcrum 2X21"
Pros: Sound awesome with great extension.
A single box can replace several.
Cons: Expensive, power hungry, needs processing

Some other 2X18" (Let's say, SB1000, JBL 728)
Pros:Potentially more rider friendly.
Easier to cross-rent
Cons: Footprint, weight.

What are your thoughts?

EAW SB250
I wouldn't use them for EDM

Fulcrum 2X21"
I have never heard them but it sounds pretty interesting

Some other 2X18" (Let's say, SB1000, JBL 728)
One of my EDM clients has me bring in my subs to a club that has four SB1000s.  You can barely hear the SB1000s next to a wall of 8-12 of my subs but they are still quite usable and might be worth looking at.

SRX728 would be fine too.  I would prefer these to the SB1000s.

TCS 2800s.  They are very similar in size and shape to an EAW SB1000 but get louder and go lower while sounding better doing it.  I own 16 of them and for some of the EDM shows, that is barely enough so I don't have to push them to the extreme.  Just provided for Benny Benassi a couple days ago with all 16 of them. We have provided for most of the tops guys out there such as Skrillex, Laid Back Luke, Dada Life, Murcus Shultz, John Digweed, George Acosta, Armin van Buuren and so many more.
