What's your primary audio job/role?
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:17:17 PM »

I hope this is OK to ask, really just to satisfy my curiosity.  I have learned a ton by reading PSW over the years; I'm just curious what segment of the industry most of our members are working in.

You forgot "freelancer". Which I also do. I own/operate my one man show, as well as freelance for the the big regionals around here, plus do a bit of touring.

True enough.  I ran out of space (it only allowed 5 options); "House of Worship" would be another one that got left off.

I don't do bars/clubs.  I don't work for a large company.  I don't tour.  I don't do HOW.

I do:

Live radio remotes.

Live recording.

Mixing live audio for video.

Amateur theater.

Public forums.

Concerts.

Installation consultations.

System trouble-shooting/repair.

And a few festival stages.

You also omitted a slot for the elves (they only come out after a threshold-shifting soundcheck) that "change everything" wilst the BE is at dinner.

House sound technician for a multi-room publicly owned and run multi-purpose performing arts center. I spec, install and maintain the sound systems for 7 separate rooms, all back stage and FOH areas, manage the sound crews for various productions, mix shows occasionally, and train operators for our casual labor force and user groups in the operation of our equipment and how to run shows. We run the gamut from symphony to ballet, to modern dance, to opera, to musical theatre to touring Broadway shows, to touring music acts, to comedians and talking heads, to community theatre, to weddings and birthday parties. We even have an art gallery. We have four house theatre technicians, one technical director and a casual hire labor force of about 100 union stage hands.

This week we have have in (all at the same time): an Opera, a musical theatre, a video/dance/performance art, a community theatre group presenting a straight play, and a talking head with a luncheon afterwards. And I guess there's an exhibit in the art gallery, but I try not to go down there that much.

And I'm supposed to write up the bid specs for a new com system and a monitor console/power distro package.

Mainly a touring BE but when home I work for one of the local/regional companies as well as a few venues. I guess "freelancer" is the best description.

I'll even admit that I've been known to touch lighting here and there, I really wish that I couldn't count to 512 sometimes...

All of the above? If I somehow get roped into being a Foh guy anyways ;)

95% of my gigs involve more channels than even the largest audio rigs have to deal with :)
