Cheapest, easiest way to run DVI-D in wall?
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:50:57 AM »

My wife is moving into a new photography studio soon. I need to run a bit of DVI-D through the wall for her projector. I need it to terminate at a wall plate on the computer side. The projector side can be a grommet or a cable pass-thru if needed. What is the best and cheapest way to accomplish this? The total length will be around 30-40 feet I'm guessing. Also this is a build-out, so we don't have to fish stuff through old construction which is nice....

Thanks!

"Best" and "cheapest" are often mutually exclusive.  Although definitely not the cheapest approach, I've found the RapidRun products to be a good option in similar situations.  One of their DVI wall plates at the computer end, a 35' or 50' 'digital runner' cable and a DVI 'flying lead' at the projector would be a simple and properly rated solution but probably also about $300 to $350.

A 35' to 50', CL2 rated DVI cable from Monoprice would be $40 to $60, but you'd have to pull the connector through and figure out the wall plate.  An option to the wall plate would be to use something like this, http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10425&cs_id=1042512&p_id=6625&seq=1&format=2 and just let the cable hang out.

Just got back from the space and talking to the contractor. The whole run is going to be in a wall and not go into the ceiling. I think that the CL2 cable with one of those pass throughs will work at the projector end. Probably go with one of these at the computer end...

Tim, you might want to try to verify the depth of the DVI feedthrough on the wall plate, the connector on then end of the cable and the cable bend radius with the wall depth.  DVI connector are not small and you don't want to end up crimping the cable to try get everything to fit in the wall cavity.

Very good point,

Adding an "extension box" to the "Plaster Ring" will give you a larger radius for the wire at the expense of the box being surface mounted to the wall. (No Box inside wall)

Or just use a 1 1/2" deep plaster ring. The Plaster Ring gets screwed to the stud (No Box inside wall).

Whoever is doing the electrical for you should have the plaster rings.

This method is common for speaker wire, Data, Alarms, and lots of other things.

Also drilling a 1 1/2 inch hole thru the top plates is common (or whatever size you need to get the connector thru)

Be sure to use no-nail plates to prevent screws or nails going thru the top plate into your cable.

Remember to install power next to the projector.

If the wall is 5 1/2 inches thick, you may not need any extensions.

Regards,  John

One other way is to run HDMI cable between the boxes ( connectors are smaller ) and use HDMI to DVI adapters as needed.
