I have always used a ground rod at the genny, and grounded the stage also. ESA requires 2 ground rods, or a plate in the ground. Different countries can have different codes regarding this.

Neither one however provides one iota of safety ground for electrical faults.

if your near a water line and no one objects clamp a ground wire the it and a ground rod. cold water ground and a ground rod is standard for grounding a service. a generator is a service. even though the landining gear is metal and touching the ground thats not a very good ground. if the gen is run while connected to the tow vehicle it aint grounded at all, rubber tires dont conduct electricity.
