White Spaces Device and Database Actuation Begins Jan. 26 in NC

http://www.businessinsider.com/a-new-form-of-wifi-is-coming-and-its-good-news-for-many-americans-2011-12

The FCC announced yesterday that they have approved one database administrator to begin operations, and one equipment manufacturer to introduce one device in one market, Wilmington, NC, starting Jan. 26.

Labsters in and around Wilmington will therefore be able to provide first-hand info on what is involved on our end to avoid these devices.

The FCC press release pdf is attached as a png file, but if it's too small to read can be downloaded from within the article linked above.

This will be interesting...

FWIW, there's been a white space system operating in the VHF band for the past three years in the Wilmington area under an experimental license. The only difference now is operations are permitted in the UHF-TV band.

For those unlicensed operations in Wilmington that require more TV channels than the two reserved channels and other channels unavailable to the TVBDs, they should register their request in the Spectrum Bridge database now so they will meet the 30 day advanced request by the time the services go live on January 26th.

Henry,

Do we know what a fixed TVBD transmitter looks like to a spectrum analyzer? (ie, the two spikes within the 6 MHz bandwidth of an analog TV transmission  and the full 6 MHz bandwidth of the new fangled DTV)

TVBD is not the Christmas present I was hoping for.

A full channel TVBD will look like a DTV transmitter sans the pilot tone at 310kHz above the lower channel edge. There is however a Microsoft prototype that can notch out one or more 200kHz chunks to allow for use of a wireless mic/com/IEM/IFB channel(s), or aggregate two adjacent TV channels to provide 11.6MHz of bandwidth for TVBD operations, both in a highly dynamic manner.

I think this is sort of related to this thread...
I just noticed a pdf on the Lectrosonics website called "RF ANALYSIS 13 MAJOR MARKET CITIES".  What I found interesting was that out of these metro areas the only one that doesn't have the hop around TVBD's is Washington DC. Isn't that where all the politicians hang out?

This whole thing was just so that the FCC would be able to make releases without a cable.
