Outboard EQ for Yamaha EMX312sc?
« on: December 02, 2011, 10:08:03 PM »

Hello,
I'm new to the board, first post.
We lost a member of the band and he owned the PA.  I don't know much about PA's but it fell to me to find a comparable unit. What we had was an old Peavey powered mixer and an Alesis outboard EQ hooked up to it through L/R outs and ins on the front of the mixer.  I bought the Yamaha EMX312sc, thinking it was a comparable unit and an Alesis EQ.  Now I don't know quite how to hook up the EQ (only really need it as a means to eliminate feedback).  When the mixer arrived, I saw that it didn't have the same ins and outs on the front that the Peavey had.

There's a single 'EFFECT OUT' jack and the manual says the following about that:
This unbalanced phone output jack outputs the signal
from the EFFECT bus. You can use this jack to output
the signal to an external effector. You can then return the
signal by connecting the external effector to any of the
LINE jacks on channel pairs 5/6 to 11/12.
If you are returning a signal from an external effector
into a LINE jack on any channel pair 5/6 to 11/12,
please be sure to turn the EFFECT knob for that channel
pair to “0”.
Then there are L and R Main Outs and this is what the manual says about them:
These unbalanced phone output jacks feed out the main
stereo output. You would typically connect these jacks to
a power amp or powered speakers. The signal sent to
these jacks is adjusted by the MAIN section’s MASTER
knob G and graphic equalizer E.
I'm told by folks on another forum that I can't use the outboard EQ with this mixer unless I buy an outboard power amp.  Is this true?  I'm afraid to experiment and maybe burn up a brand new mixer.
Thanks.  Sorry for the long post.

Typically, you would patch the EQ between the mixer's main output(s) and the power amplifier's input(s).  Since your mixer is hardwired to its power amplifier and I don't see any "insert" jacks or "return" jacks, it looks like you are stuck with the built-in "graphic EQ".  The only way to get around this effectively is to use a separate power amplifier, standalone or incorporated into a powered speaker (JBL EON, Mackie SRM450, etc.).

One solution for you is to take the Yamaha back and get a Peavey.  The patching options on the Peavey make it a lot more flexible than other brands without them.  Or you could get a separate mixer/amp set up which will have a bit more to learn but will get you into a more capable and professional level.

Good luck.  Ditch the Yamaha........

I have quite a few of these as rental stock (512SC) and the built in EQ is quite capable. I find you run of of gas before you run out of usable EQ on this. I'd ditch the outboard EQ.

Thanks for the input guys.

That's encouraging, BJ.  Maybe I won't need the outboard.
