York E15 vs E152; LS808 vs LS1208 system comparison
« on: November 05, 2011, 04:10:03 PM »

Finally got a serious buyer for my existing Yorkie (4) E15 tops over (4) LS808 subs (Crown XLS802 amps, York EP1215 processor).  In moving on I am looking at starting with a pair of E152 tops over a pair of LS1208 subs (going with the painted cabs instead of carpet this time around).  Will the output be comparable to what I currently have?  Processing will be handled by an Ashly Protea 3.6 sp and amplifiers are the Crest Pro 8200 for the tops and the Crest Pro 9200 for the subs.  I plan to move to another 4 over 4 rig in the spring, but until I order the second pair of each - how is the new system going to stack up against the current rig?  I have never heard the E152 or LS1208 before so I'm flying somewhat blind here.

I have used most of the speakers you are talking about. The E152's will easily outperform the E15 quantity and quality wise. The bigger compression driver on the tweeter will be the biggest improvement that you notice. Your new power amp will be a major  upgrade too. The two mouth coupled 1208's on each side will easily beat your old 808's. If you get the opportunity sometime, centre cluster the four 1208's together in the middle and get a good example of horn loaded subs mouth coupling.......

Mark - thanks for the insight, but I what I need to know is how the short term rig (a single pair of E152s and a single pair of LS1208s) is going to stack up against my current rig of 4 E15s and 4 LS808s.  I already knew that the complete new rig of 4 E152s and 4 LS1208s was going to absolutely eat my current rig for lunch.

Basically - will a single E152 replace 2 E15s; will a single LS1208 replace two LS808s ?  I won't have the full 4 over 4 rig until March or so.  Between now and then I will only have a single pair of E152s and a single pair of LS1208s (with the Crest Pro 8200 and Pro 9200/Ashly 3.6sp).

I used 4 LS808s for a number of years.  I then bought a pair of 1208s and sold the 808s. IMHO, a pair of 1208s is more than equal to 4 808s.

Thanks Stuart - that's the sort of real life comparison I was searching for.

One pair of E152's wont have the horizontal coverage of your pair of E15's. You are splaying your E15's aren't you...... They will generate a similar SPL level but it will be confined  to 80 degrees horizontal coverage. The single pair of 1208's will probably produce a similar kick to your existing set up but you will really love the second pair of 1208's when you add them.

Thanks Mark!  Yes I do splay my E15s currently, and I was aware that a single pair of E152s wouldn't have the horizontal coverage that my existing two pairs of E15s did.  My concern was more with overall output which you said should be close to what I have - that's what I needed to know.

As I originally said - this rig will be 4 E152s over 4 LS1208s by March.  I just needed to know how the first half of it was going to perform between now and then.
