Hello All,
We are getting ready to move a division of our shop, and redo our production shop. I am looking for some ideas for cable storage. Looking to store somewhere around 15000' of NL2, 10000' of NL4, 5000'+ of edison, 15000'+ of XLR. All in various lengths.

We have a custom wall built in the middle of the shop at the moment built out of wood with 2x4's running horizontally out of the wall for cable storage, but we are looking for something a little more permanent. Will probably end up welding something up.

Any ideas and pics would be greatly appreciated.

have you thought about soft goods storage wheeled bins? Not only can you roll them (to loading dock, etc) or into place of which system you are loading for, but the other end of this equation is you can load/ unload smaller cable cases with. Since they are typically canvas; you can put newly washed or mud-soaked cables in immediately- then clean off cables, rewrap and launder liner at your convenience.

FWIW: I like portable whatever; a cart can't be blocked like a wall can...

Some of these have hardwood bottom frames and you could use a forklift to place them in storage rack when not in active use?

We use a product from The Light Source designed to hang a lighting grid.

This way when half way through the year we realize we need to add another 1000' of whatever we can rearrange the pipes a bit and keep on moving on. I think we cut a bunch of horizontal pipes to 2.5' for cable and the verticals in our facility are just about 13' and the "wall" is about 30' long. It is nice bc I can quickly look to see if there is cable out. All pipes are loaded to the end.

Hey,
We use a 48mm scaff frame for all of our small guage cable (xlr, audio jumpers).  This frame is bolted directly into the floor with lots of protruding pegs for cable.  The heavy cable (NL4, Power, Soca etc) is all stored in stillages (http://www.stepsandstillages.co.uk/stillages_range.asp) which are basically heavy duty metal cages.  They can stack, lock together and even with 400kg of powerlock inside, are easy to handle with a forklift.
