Random ULTRA thoughts
« on: April 06, 2011, 12:52:30 PM »

ULTRA's management continues to amaze me with a commitment to improving this festival each year.  No expense (within reason) is spared in order to improve their customers' experience and yet again they blew the roof off.

The main stage this year featured Beach Sound's d&b J8/12 system flown alongside per (12x) J subs per side.  Top box count was 18 total per side.  But the star was the sub array of (24x) d&b J Infra subs.  "Bone rattling" would not be inaccurate.  Big props to Neil @ Beach Sound for continuing to walk the main stage area throughout the festival, continually improving the Infra spread over the area.  Models are great, but there is no substitute for walking it and tweaking it.  I have been told this was the largest deployment of J-Infra so far.

The biggest change this year was the construction of the Carl Cox "Mega Structure", a clear span tent with load bearing capability.  I reckon it about 250 feet long.  Audio was a 12 deep DAS AERO 50 system, with lab.gruppen power and Dolby processing, including (AFAIK) new FIR filters for the AERO system.  A SysTune multichannel average correlated what we were hearing: it didn't need much EQ.  It seems to me DAS continually improves this system.  Subs in this tent were (24x) DAS LX-218, more than adequate for the application.

I will guess the Carl Cox tent held 6000-7000 people, easily.  When it it got dark Lieberman's lighting rig turned the place into a nightclub, it was that good.  ULTRA hit a home run with this tent in terms of popularity, and with the level of production inside.

A couple of smaller tents were serviced by Scorpio Sound out of the Boston area with VT4888 and JBL custom shop subs.  Good job Kevin, and thanks for the well packaged Scorpio kit.

The "Live Stage" focused on live performances.  STS9 closed it one night, for example.  This again was a Beach Sound crew with J8/J12, but with B2 CSA stacks.

Overall, it was yet again a great event, and I believe anyone into the DJ scene should attend at least once.

No idea what the plans are for next year, but the new museum and associated construction continues and it may not be possible to hold the festival at Bicentennial Park in the future.  But I don't have any inside info, this is just a hunch.

BassMaxx?

David had a smaller stage with the Bassmaxx triple 12 coax top boxes, along with a very interesting combination of (IIRC) modified Z5000 and SB218.  He has this sub setup aligned very very very well, and the combination of impact/smack from the horn loaded Z5000s and "drop" from the 218s was very impressive.  I think he has that dialed in very nicely.

The top boxes sounded very nice to my ear as well, no real listening fatigue at concert levels.

I will get some photos up soon, I promise :-)

D.A.S. Audio up'ed the sub count last minute to 30 subs
