Looking for mic and micing technique recommendations for cage fights I'll be doing the 19th. They're being held indoors at a fairgrounds convention center and I'll be hanging a center cluster of 4 speakers directly from a 12-inch I-beam 18ft above ground level (approx 15ft above the cage)and planning to put subs under the cage.

Adequate parametric EQ for the MC mic, a well-tuned system and (most important of all) good mic technique from the MC.  That's about it.

Thanks...good points. I think I'm looking more for how to capture the "sounds" of the fights - the strikes, the grunts and groans, bodies hitting the mat, etc.

Shotguns.

You could mount some mics under the stage for the "thump" and use shotguns up top for the "smack".  

...and maybe a mic runner or two under the stage?

Audix D6 under the mat will get you all the noise you need.

The last WWE "event" we did, they spec'd a pair of '58's under the ring. But of course all they caught was the wooden ring floor boards LF rebounding  noise.

Personal opinion now... when we do cage fights, we broadcast out to live PPV and if I were the buyer, I'd like to hear realism. So accordingly, we hang a pair of '81's over the cage & catch the grunts, smacks & most of the trainers dialogue.

We were doing these pretty regular for a while. What I did was put a pair of Beta52`s under the ring and high passed them to get rid of some of the rumble.  Then we clamped a pair of 98`s to  each  corner to get some of the corner talk. The 98`s also picked up alot of the action in the ring also.
