RIP Dr. Billy Taylor
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:40:00 PM »

The Jazzmobile that Billy Taylor instituted in 1961 exposed tens of thousands of NY area students to jazz, and to music education. He will be sorely missed.

RIP, Dr. Billy.

I enjoyed listening to both his playing and his interviews and commentary on NPR.  He's leaving some mighty big shoes to fill.

Truly a great person, I met him twice during my NYU days, he attended the Jazz clinics that Herbie Hancock held for us there.

Saw him play at U Maine Augusta whe I taught there. A wonderfully instructive, intelligent, and elegant ambassador for jazz. His trio would start tunes with no count off or visible cue - very cool!

A good long life, but one hates to see him go.

An exquisite musician, and a first-rate educator. I enjoyed his videos that I became acquainted with during my studies of jazz history. He made a tremendous contribution to our knowledge and enjoyment of the art.
