See-Thru Speakers

The sky-is-the-limit when it comes to splashing cash on a high-end set of speakers but these units from will add more than just great sound to your living room – just make sure you don't walk through them. Promising “true 360 degree sound,” these glass speakers use a sound generator in the base to project the sound from both sides. Different areas of the glass are responsible for producing different frequency sounds – the curved area at the top produces high frequency sounds, the middle produces mid-range sounds, while low frequencies are produced by the area at the bottom near the base. Two different lines of glass speakers in different configurations are available – the 65.5 inch (166 cm) high Serac Series and the slightly smaller Floe Series. There's no official pricing on the Greensound site, but the Floe series with subwoofer will reportedly set you back about US$8,000.

Since the frequency response probably is 10 (or more) dB down at the bottom and top, these are some big-ass mid range speakers.

They will be at the Jan 6th-9th 2011 CES, Las Vegas, Nevada Booth #20549.
Anybody going to the CES that could take a listen?

But how do they sound?

Buying an iPod dock/clock for my girlfriend today was an experience. The best sounding was an alien looking thing by Logitech, a close-enough second at half the price without the weird look was the one I bought. All the Bose units (up to $550?) had their docks blocked so you couldn't listen to them.

Amazing both how good and how bad it can be when you want a convenient form factor and only need 100dB out of the thing.

Really? The Bose stuff was blocked off?

I'm sure we could come up with a valid reason for that, but come the F on.

I assume the appearance is to justify the low price?

That's the one I got for my wife for xmas.  Sounds pretty good for $99 and it has built-in rechargeable batteries.  Don't tell her it is alien looking.

My daughter asked me what speaker docky thing she should get for her iPod, so based entirely(!) on Bennett's recommendation I said, authoritatively, sight unseen, "Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus".

She's very pleased with it, and I concur it sounds good, especially for a small, low cost box.  They are surprising well balanced tonally, not one note bassy, or trying to be bass heavy, and not a mess of tizz.

Bennett - thanks for doing the legwork (or perhaps "earwork") - an excellent call!
