Strong Canto realy that dim?
« on: December 14, 2010, 11:58:12 pm »

Looking for a new pair of follow spots for a high school.  Currently we have a pair of Altman Comets.  They are just too dim.  When looking at the data sheet for the Canto the 575 has LESS output than the Comet?!?  At 75 ft the Comet has 142 ft candles and an 9.4 ft diameter.  At 70 ft the Canto 575 has 120 FC and 7.3 inch diameter.

Bumping up to the Altman Satellite-1 also with a 575 and it has 427 FC?

Is the Canto really that dim?  Any other ideas for a pair of nice bright follow spots.  Looking to spend around $4k total for the pair but there is some wiggle room.

Tom,
Have you considered the Lycian 1209? I have experienced better reliability with Lycian products than Canto products.

Yes we are looking at it as well.  The canto 575 is closer to our price range.  So is the Phoebus Manufacturing IM-200/120
I-Marc 200 Followspot http://www.fullcompass.com/product/365598.html  But I have to question the quality.

I also realise I may have to get the people who what to buy these to adjust the budget vs the desire.

back at my old high school, once we moved to the new building, we had 2 Lycian midget HP 1209s and two altman comets from the old school.  The midgets were more than enough for the 130 ft throw needed in that room, while the comets weren't much brighter than the stage (lit with etc source 4s and source 4 parnells).

though looking at pricing they seem to run between 4-5k each.

What kind of output do the cantos have compared to the Lycian?  And what kind of failures are you seeing?

Tom,
I have had power switch problems with several 2000 watt quarts models. Strong sent me switches many times but the same problems happened with the replacements. I am done with Canto products.
The quarts model is way dimmer than the Lycian 1209, Steve
