JBL AE series
« on: November 20, 2010, 09:57:26 PM »

Has anyone here installed or had experience with JBL's AE series?

They seem to be a good fit for a venue I am re-doing.

I'd also be open to other suggestions for a low profile 12in box. Something that can be bracket mounted tight to the ceiling.

I have installed quite a few, what are you interested in? Pretty much your standard two way box, with many different horn configurations. High frequencies always died out a little too quick, but "it is what it is"

edit: Also kinda a PITA to change from Passive to Biamp in the field, highly recommended doing this on the ground.

Yes I've experienced them and no I was not impressed with their sound.  IMO there is just something lacking - I can't quite put my finger on it but it seems that they have this kind of "boom box" low mid sound.

As an alternate I'd recommend the Community iBox series.  Great boxes, same price range, and their service is OUTSTANDING.  Sound better right out of the packaging and they make tweeks to their suggested DSP presets based on field use and feedback from clients, so you have a nice base on which to then really dial it in for the room.

My 2 cents.

Take a look at the 7200 series. Upgraded components. Sounds much better. The AM7212 is compact and can be mounted with a U bracket.

The AE series includes something like 50 models and there are over a dozen models that have a 12" driver, not to mention some compact models with dual 8" drivers.  So what are you actually looking for?  Are there any specific goals in terms of output, size, weight, pattern, frequency response and so on?

Blake,
Look at the Apogee AFI series, specifically the AFI 4, a 12" two way 800 Peak Box, with lots of different mounting options, you should find a cabinet in the AFI that should meet your needs. Thanks

While Apogee was a major player 25 years ago, they seem to have had a much reduced presence since they were bought by Bogen over 10 years ago.  The current Apogee web site seems out of date; much of the site seems to have last been updated 5 to 8 years ago, the latest news items on the web site are from over 5-1/2 years ago and the "new product" AFI brochure is dated 2002.  What is the actual status of Apogee in terms of production, support and product availability?

My last experience with Apogee occurred 7 or 8 years ago and involved a 'low voltage' contractor that was apparently a Bogen dealer and that bid on a good sized theatre project despite their never having designed or installed a live sound system of any size.  After being awarded the project they wanted to substitute Apogee speakers.  As soon as we said we'd look at that option they tried to substitute Bogen products wherever possible (mics, mixers, amps, ceiling speakers, etc.) in lieu of the specified products.  The Apogee products being used to try to justify other Bogen products that were obviously not appropriate did not seem to bode well for the future of Apogee as a product line.  FWIW, the 'low voltage' Contractor on that project ended up subcontracting a qualified party for the install and took a considerable loss.
