mx800i vs mx8800 for KF650e tops - decision time
« on: March 13, 2011, 06:31:10 PM »

I am saving for an MX8800 but just noticed a MX800i for sale programmed for my KF650's, and I am wondering how good a substitute that would be.

I have read that the Gunness focussing will be a big improvement, which it is my understanding is only in the 8800, but my biggest concern right now is getting RMS protection for the drivers and having good EQ curves.  Also right now I'm using two DBX260's to get four way crossover, so this would be a step in the right direction too.  The price difference is huge, so I'm tempted to at least go the cheaper route for the time being.

The performance difference is night and day - Go with the UX8800.  I think the MX800 could be a step backwards from your DBX260 assuming your 260 is set up with the correct crossover funtions and PEQ.

If the MX800 is functioning correctly there will probably be an improvement over a DR260 running factory tunings- they really do not sound right on a DR260. If you know what you're doing it's not difficult to come up with a much better sounding program on a DR260, but thats not for everyone and not everyone will agree this is the best course of action for a professional system. Even though my shop's MX800 is fairly old and not performing as well as it used to it's still much better than the stock settings in a DR260, however the UX8800 is the only way to go. Night and day difference.

+1 on UX8800. It's the only option for EAW speakers :)
