Advice for getting into the game?
« on: October 18, 2010, 10:57:57 PM »

Hey guys,
Been trolling on this site for a while now, but decided that it would be a good idea to start posting around here. I had a question (and i'm sure it's somewhere on here but couldn't really find a direct thread for it)
So I was just looking for some advice on how you older guys got into the game? Right now I am going to school for Music Merchandising and work at the university on their tech crew we have some good equipment including some EAW 650's, as well as SM12s and SM15 and SB528z, JBL (can't remember the model right now) Yamaha Club V's Also work on a variety of boards including several Allen & Heath, Yamaha 01V96VCM, and SoundCraft series two. I also work on a variety of NSI DJ lighting boards, and working with a lot of lighting as well as DJing.

So anyways after all that long introduction just wondering what advice you guys would give me for moving up to the next level?

Cheers!

"How did you get started?"

"Education"

"Internships"

degree or experience?

All of these search terms will give results.

Word hard, have a positive attitude, always learn new things (on your own time), watch experienced people, be the kind of person you would like to have at a gig, don't talk too much, be very attentive, learn how to get the best out of your gear, don't be too loud/soft for the gig...

There are probably a bunch more but I don't want to talk too much.  Very Happy

You're on the tech crew, so you have a place to start... just do a good job.  People notice, and you get asked to do more things when you do a good job.

Best,
Nils

Figure out how to make people NEED you, and keep meeting that need.

Keep your expenses low enough that you can have your bills paid several months in advance. You are not going to be able to make useful money for a long time. When that several month dry spot hits in the middle of an already slow winter, you don't want to be worrying about finding yourself bankrupt and out on the street.
