Global / Spigot Truss - Argh!! need recommendations
« on: September 10, 2010, 03:49:06 PM »

We've got several sections and lengths of Global Truss, and I'm getting REALLY tired of beating the pins through the conical couplers, and worse... beating them out during loadout.

There has to be others who dread this!?!? If not do you have any tips?  We use a bar (approx 24" L) to drive the pins out.

At this point, I wish we would have started out with truss that bolts together.  We have discussed a total replacement of our inventory.  Is there a reason(s) that we shouldn't do that?

Thoughts?

I work for a company right now that has global/litech truss and it sucks!

especially when someone puts the bolts in the spigots backwards Confused

i'd switch over if you can....bolting takes more time but it's less of a pain in the ass

Large rubber mallet, anyone?  ChristieLites packs one with every truss pin kit.  Never really had an issue?

I'm not familiar with Global Truss' version, but the pin truss I've used has the top and bottom pins facing each other.  Not too terrible to knock out, though the lower ones can sometimes be a pain.  However, I used an in-house truss system on the west coast that had the pins coming in from 45 degrees to each corner.  THAT was a PITA.  Having to hammer upwards was bad enough; having to rotate 60' of truss was worse.

Checking the truss with the pin type is easier than bolt-together as well; you can quickly run along the truss line and verify the clevis pin is installed, whereas bolt-together requires checking every bolt with tools.

Ahahaha...that's *exactly* what I was talking about!

Why would anybody think that was an acceptable design?  Perhaps a structural thing...

If you're going to replace your truss, talk to KAD Fabrication in Toronto.  Pretty sure they put the pins in the right way.

I have found a hammer works just fine.

we use global also.
what really sucks is when you forget the hammer... and have to use something else.... and it gets worse when your working on a tile floor or wood basketball court that you dont want to screw up on the client/venue.

i've been known to assemble and disassemble outside.

the biggest thing is bring a hammer. yup its loud and annoying.

taking apart is worse when its just you and they want to stick together.

i do like the idea of a rubber mallet though. that may help with getting them unstuck better then other ways i have tried.

I've had some pins get stuck for a few shows because there was so little room to swing the hammer. Global pins system sucks.

if you are having that type of a problem, try getting a 1/2 steel rod about 15" long. that'll give you a punch to put on the pin and swing from outside of the truss Smile

forget hammers and rubber mallets. what you need is a dead blow hammer (the ones harbor freight sells arent bad). It will make a world of difference.

looking long term, I would sell off the truss and buy something that bolts together.
