Screen Size/Aspect Ratio
« on: August 14, 2010, 01:17:00 PM »

Hey all -
THis is my first time here... I have been lurking for a while, I hope to contribute sometime, but I have a noob question for ya'll!

I've asked this question to a couple AV guys, none seem to be able to confidently answer it.

WIth my 9x12 FF screens, those are built with the intention of using a 4:3 aspect ratio, correct? So when I am projecting simple Powerpoint out of a laptop, I can fit the screen.

So how is it that I am able to fit that same image perfectly to a 10x10 cradle screen? Since 4:3 isnt a perfect square - why does it fit?

Perhaps you are only pulling 7.5' of screen up out of the cradle.

Right, Ok so I'm not crazy (just not paying enough attention). Shooting a 4:3 image onto a fully extended 10x10 screen shouldnt fit properly, correct?

So why do they make square screens? Would that be a ... 1:1 aspect ratio?

Yup, 1:1. It's a holdover from the days of overhead projectors and slide shows where some slides would be rotated 90 degrees and need that vertical height.
