Help. What kind of light fixture do I need?
« on: December 04, 2010, 12:17:31 PM »

Not well versed in types of fixtures.  Looking for a sharp edged conical focused beam spotlight that can light performers at short distances in small clubs, say around 20 feet give or take a bit. LED if possible.  Something that won't wash out the whole stage trying to get the faces.  Any suggestions?

Not LED however.

And throw distance is only one factor needed to determine the size lens you need. you need to know how wide of an area you are trying to light with one fixture. You can always shutter the top and bottom of the beam to shape it as needed.

Budget? If you need a focused beam (sharp edge) the ADJ X-Color is worth taking a look at, but it uses a color wheel, not RGB mixing.
Most LED pars are fairly narrow, just look at the beam spread. ADJ/Elation has an LED fresnel that has been fairly popular if you just need white or a gel.

Thanks Duane, I'll check those out. Not sure of budget yet.  I know what I want the light to look like, just not the lighting terminology to describe it properly.  Years ago I used some Leico ellipsoidals that had the look - but they were for big rooms and needed to be 50 plus feet from stage.  They threw a white sharp edged beam and projected a 4 or 5 foot circle on the artist.  Trying for that - but in the 10 to 20 foot from stage range.  A "mini-Leico" ?  LED is a plus for power draw and heat.  Small size and low weight is good 'cuz these are just small rooms/stages.

an etc source 4 w/ 26 degree lens would be fine at 20', but it's not exactly a 'low power' fixture (either 575w or 750w)

it'd produce a 9' diameter circle on stage at that distance, which could be shuttered in as well to be cut exactly to your performers space used

the zoomable s4 fixtures can get a tighter shot, or you *could* use a 19, 14, or 10 degree lens if you need a really tight shot, although at 20' a 10 degree lens will be about a 3.6' diameter, which is REALLY tiny

+1 to what James said. What you are describing is the beam produced by an ellipsoidal luminaire. At the moment Source Fours have the best price/functionality ration (although I am a big fan of the Selecon Pacific) but they are not LED based. I would go for the 14 (4'ish diameter @20') or 19 (6'ish diameter @20') degree S4 and lamp it at 575w. If you are set on LED and cost is not an issue, you could look at something like the Robert Juliat ALEDIN 631SX which would meet your needs for an exceptionally high cost.

he could always jump down to a 375w to save power.

Do these folks move?

Much as I hate 'em, nothing beats a cheap spotlight with a low-paid operator for theatricality.
