3D Visualizer question
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:59:29 PM »

Im using MagicQ PC. Is there a free 3D visualizer that will work for it? I have downloaded and tested out the demo versions of Wysiwyg and Capture.

Nope. Unfortunately, there aren't really any free vizualizers out there that aren't tied to a specific console (MA 3D, LightJockey, etc) and the folks at Chamsys don't make one.

wysiwyg pricing:
https://www.cast-soft.com/cast/store/index.php

starts at $699 and goes up from there, plus a yearly membership fee if you want updates to the software

I really wouldn't get anything less than perform if you want to do real renderings and preprogramming, so you're looking at like $5000 + membership (first years included I believe)

you can lease a dongle for about half the price

there's quite a few cheaper options out there though...light converse is about $3700 with no membership fee and is an equally quality program

Visualizers are just plain expensive.  There's no way around it, and until then I will not be buying into it.  I am using American DJ's myDMX for PC control, which comes with a (not the greatest) visualizer application.  Even when I'm using the "real" console (Avolites Pearl) I'll still sometimes build my show in myDMX.  You can download the software for free, or buy it for $300 and get a "free" dongle for PC control.

It helps get a general idea, but more beneficial for me is that it allows me to show my clients what their show will look like.  The first time I printed and showed one client (my best, actually) the stage layout for a recent fashion show they acted like it was the most amazing thing they'd ever seen.  It really goes a long way to be able to show a client at least a rough idea of what everything will look like once the lights come on, before you've even loaded the truck with any gear.  I'm just not sure it's worth $5000 (at least to me at this point).

they're really only beneficial to people who are doing large scale shows, as i've found that designing anything 'small' (meaning under 20 moving lights) on a visualizer typically takes longer than it does to actually do the show

even with a free visualizer like MA3D (which is arguably the best one)

I certainly agree with this, James.  If I were programming for a large tour then it would make sense to have a decent visualizer that I could connect directly to my console.  The last time I set up a basic stage (40 cans, 4 movers, and a dozen LED strips) in the myDMX visualizer it took me several hours just to place the objects.  By the time I got it all laid out I had no desire to switch over to my creative brain to program.  But it's impressive to clients and is really the only way you can show them how amazing it looks in your mind before the show starts.

unfortunately this is NOT actually a visualizer of any kind, simple a tool that allows artnet visualization in wysiwyg

for it to actually do anything, you need to already have a copy of wyg installed
