Hi there,

Going to add a couple of 18" Active Sub Cabinets to my HK Audio Actor DX rig next week.

Ideally I want to spend around

You want to add 18" subs into a fully processed rig which already has 15" subs? Not a good idea unless you can get HPF's routed all over the place, in which case you'd be bypassing the on-board DSP in the Actor DX Tops (which is kinda pointless).

The Actor is a fine portable rig, but it does not scale up nor play well with 3rd party boxes.

I see what you're saying. I'd effectively have to add a crossover between the 15's and 18's to split the low end, meaning I'd have to bypass the actor ddo. Ok, I see loads reasons for that being a rubbish idea.

Would it be possible to run the Actor rig as per normal, and run the 18's off the mono out on the desk, thru a crossover?

What would the effect of the 15's over lapping the 18's freq be?

I've been wanting to add the 18" to give DJ type events (house, techno, DnB) a more thumping bottom end. Originally saw the HK 18" sub and thought I'd keep the active 15's buy swap out the passive 15" and replace with the active 18".

The Actor has been fine for everything other than the heavy bass dj work (I prefer band work). The best option would be to just add another Actor Dx rig, I just dont have the 5k sitting around.

Any thoughts would be welcome

You could potentially end up with less low end by running the lows through the 15's and 18's.  There's a lot of threads on here explaining the theory behind the cancellation if you're interested.  I don't know anything about the Actor rig, but if you want to add 18s, you'll need a crossover to make sure the same frequencies aren't coming out of both.

As far as choice goes, the only one I've used of the ones you listed is the JBL PRX, and I was very unimpressed with it.

Let me summarize, you run your Master signal from Console into the Top Boxes via XLR. Inside the tops is the DSP brain of the rig, so you hook up XLR to "Sub Out" which sends signal to Sub 1 (Active). Sub 2 is passive and slaved off Sub 1 via Speakon cable.

As you can see, trying to squeeze extra 18" subs into the above config is quite messy and requires proper planning and DSP to do it properly. Incidentally, in the manual for the Actor DX I'm nearly sure HK Audio specifically recommend not trying to integrate other boxes. The whole thing is designed to play together and the only real room for expansion is a whole 2nd rig and going 2 stacks per side and obviously keeping the horns from overlapping (60x40 pattern IIRC).

If I were buying subs, why would I want a sub that is 5-9db LESS than others in output??  Go for the HORSEPOWER!  Spend a little more now one time, and enjoy many years of great use!

Cheers, I'll certainly scan back for those threads (on fone at mo, so awkward), although it seems my only sensible route would be adding another whole Actor Dx rig. Will have to wait another month or two
