Insurance Blues
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:46:44 PM »

Guys,

After forty years with our insurance company we finally had to file a rather large claim. A tornado damaged a ton of gear at a county fair we were at.

I didn't worry because we have coverage. Got back to the office called my agent, called the claims department, filed the claim.

Next thing to arrive in the mail was a letter canceling our coverage. A rather nasty law suit will no doubt follow.

To keep things going I have been trying to find another insurance company. I have been up front with them about what has happened with my old company.

Every company I talk to says that they will not cover this type of business!

Help!

I need the name of companies that write policies that do cover our industry.

Either email me, PM me or respond here.

Bob,

I have a few questions.

1) Did your insurance company send the cancellation letter before evaluating and settling your claim?

2) Was you policy specific to your sound business, or part of your homeowner's policy?

3) If a settlement offer was put forth by the company, did you accept it by cashing the check, or did you contest the amount, obviously because you thought the offer was not enough?

4)  Did the company "cancel" or did they just "decline to renew" your policy?

They can not cancel your policy based on a claim submission only-they have to settle that beforehand.  Typically, if they feel your business activities are too risky after that point, they send a "decline to renew" letter when your policy expiriation hits.

Best regards,

John

I have been using music pro insurance for several years now, had to file a small claim a few years back...they were fantastic about it!  I received a check to replace the stolen equipment quickly and with zero hassels...definately recommend them as a possible provider!

I have a few questions.

1) Did your insurance company send the cancellation letter before evaluating and settling your claim?

Yes.

2) Was you policy specific to your sound business, or part of your homeowner's policy?

It was a business key policy specifically for my business.

3) If a settlement offer was put forth by the company, did you accept it by cashing the check, or did you contest the amount, obviously because you thought the offer was not enough?

No settlement offer was made.

4)  Did the company "cancel" or did they just "decline to renew" your policy?

They canceled my policy. And said if I did not like it I could sue them.

They can not cancel your policy based on a claim submission only-they have to settle that beforehand.  Typically, if they feel your business activities are too risky after that point, they send a "decline to renew" letter when your policy expiriation hits.

Refusing to pay and canceling the coverage.

What did they say, that you should've checked the weather report. This is getting way to common. They won't insure you because there may be some risk. Isn't that the point of insurance. If there was no risk you wouldn't need it.

Take care & good luck with your lawsuit,  Bob H

Refusing to pay and canceling the coverage.

Unbelievable and sickening. I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to you.

I would be interested to know what company this is so that I never do business with them, or if I am doing business with them, that I find someone else instead.

I was wondering if I should mention their name or not. But their initials are AFI... >:(

I'm a bit confused.  We happen to have a Business Key policy with the "unnamed" and it is a General Liability policy which does not cover replacing our equipment, only the bodies and equipment of other parties involved.  For instance, when a lady in heels trips on a cable and twists her ankle they will [hopefully] cover medical and or legal costs.  We have a separate policy (with MusicProInsurance) that covers gear in case of damage or theft.  btw, MusicPro has been great.  Sometimes Laura is a little difficult to get a hold of but she's always taken care of things.

I have no idea of the details of the denied claim, but this whole incident serves as a reminder for us all to read our insurance policies.  Every last word.  I know they don't make is easy to understand, but it's pretty much laid out in black and white what is and is not covered.  If you've never read your policy before, you might be surprised.

It is one thing to deny a claim due to what is/is not in the paperwork.  It is totally another (and I believe illegal) to just drop coverage without approving or denying a claim.  If I didn't read the fine print then I am at fault.  If I covered all of the bases and paid for a service, I expect to at least have a fair chance.

I would file a complaint with the Insurance Commissioner's office in your state.
