Bassmaxx SP 218 sub and Hemholz radiator enclosure????
« on: April 06, 2010, 09:43:24 PM »

I have heard that this new dual 18 from Bassamaxx with the Faital Pro 18's in it is in incredible dual 18 sub.  However, I keep reading the term Hemholz radiator on the literature for this sub.

My question for the sub gurus on the LAB is how does this box differ from the standard bassreflex dual 18's that we have all owned and or used?  What is the Hemholz radiator part or function of the Bassamaxx box and how does this translate into making for a superior dual 18 sub?

First of all, it's Bassmax. It's only called Bassamax if you are an Italian immigrant. Very Happy

And a Helmholtz resonator is a tuned length of pipe. Or a port in other words.....

To be a Helmholtz resonator, you need a chamber and a port.
From Wikki:
“Helmholtz resonance is the phenomenon of air resonance in a cavity. The name comes from a device created in the 1850s by Hermann von Helmholtz to show the height of the various tones. An example of Helmholtz resonance is the sound created when one blows across the top of an empty bottle.”

Every ported cabinet is a Helmholtz resonator, the relationship between the box chamber volume and the port area and depth determine Fb, the box resonance.

Another fancy term for a ported box is a phase inversion cabinet, but that sounds too scary.
