42" 720p or 1080p?
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:27:46 PM »

So I'm having the discussion with our consultant on a current project regarding a digital signage system.  The originally spec'd product no longer exists so we are in the current process of identifying a new product.  Basically looking for a player that resides behind the display and is connected to via our campus network.  The original spec called for a player that was identified as 1080p.  A couple of the products that we are looking at now are 720p.  So the question I have, on a 42" display that is broken up into sections, do you think that we'll see a difference between 720 and 1080?

By "broken up into sections" do you mean like a quad split or more like a video window with a graphics crawl below and some other graphics off to one side that is created by a processor?  What is the display's native resolution?

Hey Brad,

I expect like a video window with a graphics crawl below and some other graphics off to one side that is created by a processor.  I just double checked and realized that it's a 40" LED not 42" as I originally thought.  It's the Samsung LED UN40B7000.

No. I do not think you will see a distance if you are more than a couple of feet from the display.

Here is a great article on the subject from Carton Bale. Even has a Chart!

That information addresses the aspect of looking at a 1080p or 720p native resolution image, however I don't believe that it addressed that the display is native 1920x1080 and will be upscaling a 720p source in order to fill the screen.

It might also be worth noting that the Samsung display model noted seems to be a consumer product and the warranty is specifically limited to noncommercial applications, which typically means anything other than consumer/residential applications.
