Show recording, flash stick duplicators & DRM
« on: February 17, 2010, 01:29:27 pm »

Hello All,
I'm toying with the idea of offering live recordings for sale on flash (thumb) drives after shows at a venue I'm TD at.

I'm thinking the artists would likely go for it with a 3-way split between the artist, venue and me.

I'm looking at something like this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_sl c.asp?Recs=10&Nav=|c:4263|&Sort=4

For the replication, but wondering about copy protection.

Is there some sort of easily implemented DRM that I can use to prevent duplication?

Any of you doing anything like this?

Thanks,
David

I can't help you with the copy protection, but are the bands all doing originals?  If not, you don't want ASCAP, BMI and SOCAN on your case.  Those guys play hardball. Twisted Evil

Easily implemented == Easily defeated.

"Mechanical" royalties fall under "compulsory license" terms of so much money per song, per replication.  I think the current rate is 8

+1 and even if you were to offer it. If the kiddie's can't put it on their iPod they're not going to want to buy it.

There is also the people that won't buy it if they find out you are implementing DRM. I know I wouldn't buy a copy of music I couldn't convert to whatever format/copy it to my computer.

David,

Give me a shout.  We have the gear you need to make 1000s of USBs as well as send the show straight to mobile phones. On top of that we have an in-house clearance department that clears EVERY song that will be played (not just covers).
