Looking for S/PDIF to balanced line converter
« on: February 16, 2010, 12:07:29 AM »

I am short by an output channel for a gig with my 01V96 and while I could bring an outboard rack with preamps via ADAT and get some more outputs that way, I was trying to keep it sorta simple. Besides, I may be using the ADAT for recording.

So, I remembered that the S/PDIF input and output is patchable so I could use it for 2 more outputs if I could convert it to balanced lines.

Anyone know of a cost effective, available, device to do this conversion? I have found lots of S/PDIF to RCA converters but I want a balanced line to go to my amp rack.

thanks

Rob -

I'm not sure what your definition of cost effective is, but you can look at the Kramer 6410 or 6410n, but you're looking at $6-700 worth of cost for your desired effect.  Those are actually the cheapest converters with balanced outputs that I know of and they are hard-wire in/out only - no connectors beyond Phoenix.

Good luck!

Rob

Try Radio design labs (RDL). This is 2 channel unit.

There are some DAT decks out there that have coax ins and XLR ins/outs. You would be basically using it as a AD/DA but the bonus is that you could use it as a recorder too.

Not a bad piece to have in your rack if you can find one with the proper IO. DAT decks are cheap now that they are a dead technology.

Buy a used fx unit in the $100 range that has S/PDIF i/o and balanced analog i/o, set-up the routing and hit bypass.

It's not exactly compact, but for $300 they throw in a graphic EQ with the package:

I used one of these until recently, and it did the job.  It will even sum the stereo signal down to mono if you want.  The digital input is technically AES/EBU, but it works fine with a S/PDIF signal too.

Used Lex MX200 maybe? I assume a dry mixed signal would do it.

Midiman Flying Cow!

That looks perfect. I guess that is why they stopped making them. Sad

Haven't seen any for sale in the US yet.
