About the Lab12 driver...
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:18:11 PM »

Hello

My first post here!
I'm very intrigued and interested in Labhorn.
I have a question though. It's about the Eminence Lab12.
Since it uses a foam suspension and as we know this type of material tends to rotten with time.
Often I've seen surrounds that were falling apart in dust or been cut!
Did anybody ever had this problem yet?
In other words, how long this material will last considering a normal usage?
Since Lab12 have been on the market for enough time there must be a kind of time statistic.

Other question : main difference between old Lab12 and new Lab12Gen2?
Thanks

There is no LAB12 Gen 1. It was a prototype that was never for sale. In probably 4 years of LAB12 usage I haven't had a problem with dry rot, but some report that after about 10 years it starts to be a problem.

After 4 to 5 years your gonna want to recone or replace the subs anyway especially with regular usage. The surround, spider and wire leads will be worn out prob much sooner than the surround encountering rot.

I thought the rot was caused by a type of fungus that lived in the Latex, and manufacturers have been treating foam surrounds with a fungicide ever since the problem was identified?

Latex based glue could rot, but the polyester surrounds themselves fail.

Newer speakers are using Polyether surrounds, which holds up better than the polyester formulations.

Hydrolysis and UV radiation causes the breakdown, keep those old speakers in a dark, dry environment.
