Your favorite 12's and/or 15's
« on: December 09, 2009, 04:39:01 PM »

Looking for your favorite 12's and for your favorite 15's in a rock band small bar setting

I'm talking one per side, sometimes with, sometimes without sub.

I want easy, value, and sound decent without the sub for very small gigs.

I've tried a few, what are your favorites.

Here is me and my friends (I'm on bass, I mix the sound, I do dmx lighting, and I give the forgotten lyrics to the singer)

My Preference based on overall sound quality? EAW JFX260/290, Biamp'd with Crown IT's...

But if that's not available..... EAW NT26/NT29   Very Happy   Good on ya Todd!

As for Value, the QSC K-12 sounds darn good for the money.

I own and use all three, depending on the situation.

Thanks.   Cool

I save money for NT26's.  Or maybe JFX's?  Haven't heard them, but I see them pop up on the 'bay more often than the NT's...

Hi Stephane,

I noticed on ebay in Montreal just the other day a pair of JFX-290 cabinets at an okay price.  They've been up there a half dozen times at least.

You might be able to contact him and work out a bargain for yourself, and pick them up too!

They are great, small rock n' roll boxes.

QRX 115's are what I've been using and have never dissapointed. Great sounding, reasonably priced, entry level pro boxes.

Thanks. Next time I'm at Solotech, I'll give them a try. I go almost every other week, to take a look at their deals.

I have the K12's to try too, and they have some.

I purchased quite a few gems from them.

Thanks

Keep your favorites coming

If you intend to run these speakers without subs then you would be hard pressed to find a better all around speaker than a JBL SRX725. Add subs and you can make some magic happen.

I really like SRX715's but for smaller show my NX55's work well too.  When EV comes out with a ZX3a I'll probably jump all over those.

I happen to use HPR 152's and 118's most of the time but I think that you will find in the small club scene it is more how you place and setup the speakers, than the type or brand of speakers themselves.

You will have to avoid reflections off of the ceiling and walls and other oddly shaped parts of the building, try to avoid putting the sound directly into anyones face. In smaller spaces you have to consider the reflections as part of your stage volume because it is likely to get back into the mics if you overpower the room with sound.

Lots of people can get small rig gigs, the ones that I like to see are the ones that are in control of their rig.

The best 15" 2-way speaker i've heard on their own definately have to be the GAE PS151T. They're only rated at 126db peak but hell, they sounded like they were giving more than 120db out. I heard a stack of 4 of them in a 2 by 2 configuration. I've not heard a lot of 2-way speakers on their own, but the GAE ones definately were impressive. RCF loaded, and when the guy put them as loud as he could without clipping the system, it was LOUD. And at the same tim, it didn't hurt your ears at all, ot even a tiny bit.

I'd love to hear the JBL SRX715 and SRX725 but god, there's nowhere near me that has them on demo, and I dont think anywhere in the uk that actually has them on demo. Everywhere I ring tells me the same story, "sorry mate JBL uk won't let me have a pair to demo for you, just have to buy them or don't buy them". I'm gutted.

If you like light cabinets, the RCF 522A, but only with a sub.

There is also someone just south of ottawa moving a bunch of JFX560's (10 total between the two different aged cabinets)  but his asking is a little steep in my opinion.  Kloda in Montreal also has JF260's they would sell (again not for the greatest price).  Thirdly there is a seller in ottawa with four QRX 115's for a fair price.  These are all purchases I have considered.

For easy value though, biamping passive might not be the best idea.

I'd go Zxa5 if the budget allowed, or FBT if it didn't.

Moog was just selling some used FBT Himaxx 40's for about $600 a box, which I consider pretty fair.

I might be able to line you up with a few FBT 4a's or 6a's to try out.   Depending on some other choices I make there might be several other good small speakers I could let you audition.

PM me if you want.

Cheers,

Marlow

PS, what bar is that at??? St Dennis Pub doesn't ring a bell, and I live on St dennis!

So I did try out the K12's. Very nice box, but I was expecting more. They are good speakers, I just thought that in this modern day, technology would be able to give us powered 12's at a reasonable price that was just magical. Especially since a few here put them on their favorites. Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving them a thumbs down, I just thought they sounded good, not great.

Also, to tell you where I'm coming from, the kit I now have is 2 X turbosound 1x18 subs, and 2 x JBL 4726 clones. Powered by 2 QSC PLX amps. I've used this kit on about 15 gigs now, pushing it at 75% max, most times 50-60%. It's too big, and not super easy to set up, or transport, even in my F150.

So keep you suggestions coming, I love gear hunting.

Hey, thanks Marlow.

I will certainly keep my options open, and use your help my friend.

Pub St-Denis is in St-Denis sur Richelieu. It's a nice little, (and I mean little) place.

Gonna look up your suggestions, and probably be in touch with you.

Thanks again
