What's your take? d&b J8, J12 or L-Acoustics KUDO?
« on: November 06, 2009, 01:39:18 am »

Hello Guys

We are looking at buying a flown hang of 8 dual 12" line arrays and 6 double 18" horn loaded subs each side for touring purpose, totally 16 tops and 12 subs.

Here are our options:
1. d&b audiotechnik J8
2. d&b audiotechnik J12
3. L-Acoustics KUDO

I know they all are good, but if you have to choose one of them as the best of best for a rock job, what's your take?

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

d&b by far. The only thing l'Acoustic makes that can keep up with the J series is the K1, and that's twice as heavy and needs twice the motor power.

Get 12 J8's and 4 J12's for downfills and call it a day. Throw some B2's on the ground for LF support and you'll be ready to rock.

+1 for d&B J series. The J-Subs are brilliant and cardioid too!  Cool

Evan,  have you had a chance to hear (or more appropriately; feel) the INFRA sub as low end extension on a J series array?

+100 for anything made by d&b. Every single time I've been on one of their rigs, no matter where, no matter the room, it has been awesome.

Evan,

Have you mixed or listened to the KUDO with the new presets (on LA8 amps)? It's really good, much better than the older XTA/Lake presets. The system has more presence, it sounds louder and it retains the nice low mid that the old presets had.

My only criticism of the Kudo compared to the other L'Acoustic boxes is that the top end doesn't voice the same way as their other products even with the new presets. I believe it's because the compression drivers use a phenolic diaphragm (or so I'm told) as opposed to the rest of their products which use a metallic diaphragm. When I recently heard them side by side with the K1 with the new presets, the difference was apparent. I'm sure in a standalone environment you wouldn't notice it though.

They only have 2 x 1 inch (1.75" diaphragm) drivers … not a lot of HF horse power for a box that weighs about 200lbs

They also look very much like a BMS with a custom heatsink added.

If they have BMS drivers, most likely they have polyester diaphragms.  Phenolic diaphragms are usually reserved for all-weather paging horns, and rarely do anything over about 6K!  Although, after hearing the KUDO, they very well may have phenolic diaphragms.. Rolling Eyes

To the OP:  Comparing KUDO vs. J-Series is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.  The J's are in a whole 'nother league.
