What is better?
« on: March 07, 2011, 03:00:39 PM »

Hi guys,

Kind of caught in a delima.

Was shopping around for JBL eon 518s then the guy showed me the prx 618xlf....
Was about to pay money then my younger brother drag me to another shop selling Folded Horns.....

Have heard Wharfedale MX F18B, Cerwin vega ab-36b, Peavey SP FH & DJS horn, B-52's LX SPF18S.
All of them do go almost as low & loud VS the JBLs...only alot cheaper (getting a xti or yamaha amp together.)
The horns on paper shows 30Hz - 300Hz.

How should i go about choosing which to get?
EDITED HERE> I meant to get the jbls or the horns?

What will be the deciding factor? In which area..

I am not doing gig or mobile dj, just putting at home for music.
Or i just get LAB sub plan^^?

Please advise.
Thanks.

If this is for home use-then why not get a loudspeaker system that has less "color" than a PA loudspeaker,  Unless you are just looking for loud.  In that case you need to start with your budget.

You need to also look a lot deeper at the specs than just a printed freq response.  Such as + or - and how does that relate to a stated sensitivity and so forth.

Comparing is not as simple as it would seem-as not everybody rates them the same way.

I'd avoid ANY horn with that kind of freq response

subs however...

Are you saying horn loaded subs can't do that range?

I guess I'm confused

Me too.  :o

Regardless though, if the OP is looking for home theatre boxes there are plenty of companies offering speakers made to order for that application. If the OP is looking for pro sound components for home theatre then the only true test will be a blind listening test.

As for the choices listed other than JBL I wouldn't put my money into any of them. As for the JBL, the PRX are pretty good, but only IF I had a specific need.

And OP. Work within your budget, but keep in mind you get what you pay for.

Well, i do like it loud, trying to recreate club sound at home, i want low feq in quentity.
The wharfedale mx f18b is @ 106db sensitivity for driver, pushing with 800 rms.

I already is using pa mains at home, its only the SUB that is my last (had another 15" pa sub-people called it scoop but i hate that type of sound> always the 80-120Hz over power the 40-50Hz ), that is why i do not want to go wrong this time.

Do also have a 18" ported at home but that belongs to my brother...
Now getting the sub to move to my new home.

horn loaded subs sure can

i guess when i hear the word 'horn' i automatically associate it with a HF driver, as so few people refer to subs as 'horns'

Folded horns can do that feq, just like Danlys.
The vendor use rta to test for me to see, 30Hz @ bout 100+db, everything is shaking in his shop....Of cos low pass set @ bout 80Hz from the DRPA.

I am mostly into music, content lowest will be around 40Hz, so not looking at some leading brands like SVS.

Yup, prx 618 xlf is nice. I like the powerful low end.
Having said this> i cannot really tell the brand just by listening to the "sound", which is why maybe one will consider other factors like build, quality etc. To me, if it delievers what i want, i will get it.

Waiting for a vendor to bring in EAW sub for me for test :)
